Which Came First... The Chicken or The Egg?

February 13, 2011 our chickens hatched.

I have wanted chickens for years and have saved loads of egg cartons for the day. This year my boys and I just happened to go to the feed store on February 14, the day the baby chicks arrived. They were one day old and it was love at first sight. We were mesmerized. I promised the boys that we would go home, prepare a place and come back to get them the next week. So we did.

This blog is our chicken story and a look at "The Good", "The Bad", and "The Ugly"of what we have learned through this wonderful adventure of raising backyard chickens.

I hope we can inspire you to raise your own backyard chickens or purchase your "Eggs" from those who do so that we collectively can decrease the demand and put an end to "The Ugly" in the chicken industry.

Chickens and Boys

Linda, known for her beauty.
Dylan holding White Chick aka Blanche DuBois. Dylan named her White Chick but my friend thought it was an awful name so she calls her Blanche. Needless to say, White Chick / Blanche DuBois has a bit of an identity crises. Notice that she is pointing her toes trying to be all prim and proper, like she is going to tea or something. I think it has all gone to her head because she often thinks that she is too good to hang with the other girls and ventures off alone.
Linda checking to see if Dylan is ok.

Noah decides that Dylan needs a chicken on his back.

Tails up! I love their little poofy bloomers.

Pullets in Their 1st Coop

Pullets are hens who have not begun to lay eggs. These picture show my girls enjoying the outdoors. I can count eight hens in this photo but there are a total of nine. The one up front looks like Goldie.

Ruby is chilling outside on top of and overturned flower pot.

Getting drowsy...

aaaaw, napping outside in the sun, the good life!
The hens new feeder that I made from a frosting bucket complements  of Tom Thumb.

1st Coop

This is the girls first coop outside. Nine happy pullets lived in here. My son built if for them and he also built a yard around it. Happy Days before predators. They soon out grew this small coop.

First Day Home

As best I can tell from front to back we have:
Noah Cocino, Mabel. Goldie, White Chick aka
(Blanche DuBoi), Lucky, Linda (hidden), Dori

Noah Cocino, White Chick, Goldie,
Mabel, Linda, Lucky, Dori

Noah Cocino
There were three breeds of chicks for us to choose from, Araucana, Road Island Red. and Board Rock. I had decided on the Araucana because I heard that their eggs are healthier with lower cholesterol.  Dylan and Noah each wanted to choose their chick. Dylan chose an Araucana with a stripe down the center of her head. Noah wanted a Board Rock. When I asked him to choose another because we weren't getting this kind, Dylan looks at me and says "Mom, Noah wants this one". I couldn't refuse even though I knew nothing about this breed. So this is how we ended up with seven instead of six.
